Lakers swept in playoffs; LeBron James considers retirement options

Despite turning 41, "King James" played with tremendous effort but was unable to single-handedly lead the Los Angeles Lakers past the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals of the 2026 NBA playoffs.

The future of LeBron James remains a major topic in the NBA after the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference playoffs on the morning of May 12 (Vietnam time).

In what could be LeBron James' final appearance in the NBA, the Lakers lost 110-115 to the Thunder on their home court, resulting in a 0-4 series sweep in the Western Conference semifinals. Although "King James" turned 41, he still played hard, recording 24 points and 12 rebounds. However, his performance was not enough to prevent the LA team from being swept, especially with their top star— Luka Doncic sidelined due to injury.

After the game, the four-time NBA champion made no commitment regarding his return for the next season. James' current contract with the Lakers has expired, and he will enter the offseason as a free agent amid numerous speculations about his future.

Some U.S. sources suggest James might sign a one-year extension with the "Purple & Gold" for a 24th NBA season. However, there are also indications that he is weighing the possibility of moving to another team or even retiring after more than two decades at the highest level.

"I don't know what my future holds.", the 1984-born star shared. "For now, I'll go home, spend time with my family, talk to them, and think carefully before making a decision."

According to the American superstar, the most important factor is not about titles or records, but whether he still has the motivation to endure the grueling routine of the NBA.

"What I have to consider is whether I still want to commit to the whole daily preparation process—from arriving at the practice facility hours before games to maintaining the highest level of intensity.", James added.

"The King" also asserted that he has nothing left to prove after a legendary career filled with countless records and accolades.

"I've experienced everything in this league. The only thing driving me now is the chance to compete for a championship.", the NBA's all-time leading scorer emphasized.

As the Lakers conclude their season, the Oklahoma City Thunder advance to the Western Conference Finals, where they will face the winner of the series between the San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves for a spot in the NBA Finals, aiming to successfully defend their title.
