Today, NBA reporter Gautam Varier reported that if James chooses not to retire next season and does not return to the Lakers, three NBA teams could potentially become targets for James.

James' future remains uncertain, as he will become a free agent this summer. James can choose to stay with the Lakers, move to another team, or possibly even retire from the game.
If James chooses to continue his NBA career elsewhere, insider Jake Fischer reported that the Warriors, Cavaliers, and Knicks could potentially enter his consideration. These teams have been linked to him for some time.
If James leaves the Lakers, the Cavaliers are often seen as the most likely destination. The 22-time All-Star is a native of Akron and has played for the Cavaliers for a total of 11 seasons. Ending his career with his hometown team would be fitting. The Cavaliers' core players also seem eager to reunite with James. It is reported that Mitchell and Harden plan to recruit James this summer.
It is reported that the Warriors' Curry and Green will also make a full effort to recruit James. Their relationship with James could give them an advantage. Green and James have been close friends for years. The 41-year-old veteran also seems to have grown closer to Curry over the years, having been teammates on the USA Basketball team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Regarding the Knicks, it is reported that they wanted to sign James when he became a free agent in 2010, 2014, and 2018. Each time he decided not to go to New York, but this time the situation might be different.

While any team acquiring James would become a strong contender for the championship, they would require James to accept a significant salary reduction. His salary for the 2025-26 season is $52.6 million, and none of the three mentioned teams can offer him such a contract. Moreover, James' current performance does not warrant such a salary.
James averaged 20.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game in the 2025-26 season. He still has the ability to dominate games, though not as consistently as before.
However, insider Dave McMenamin reported that if James is willing to accept a lower salary, the Lakers also hope he stays.
“Typically, he signs a 1+1 contract with a player option that he can exercise if he wishes, but he is a completely free agent, and we'll see if he wants to stay with the Lakers. They do have interest in welcoming him back, but the key is the contract amount. The Lakers will build their future team around Doncic. This doesn't mean LeBron cannot be part of it, but certainly not at the $52.6 million contract he currently has. If LeBron prioritizes salary, he will have other options.”
At this stage of his career, winning a championship must be James' most important goal. He has already earned over $500 million in salary in the NBA. Another big contract would not change James' life in any way. However, he might not think so.

It will be very interesting to see what decision James makes this summer. If the Lakers, currently hot with a 50-26 record ranked third in the West, can go deeper in the playoffs, he might be tempted to stay and retire with the Lakers.
James' agent Rich Paul today denied reports about James' future in a podcast: “They listed various teams, speculation poured in, every article mentioned it. But none of this has any basis. I don't know what will happen, he himself doesn't know, we haven't even discussed it. We talked about enjoying the present.”
“This man is playing meaningful games alongside his son on the court, and the Lakers are playing well now, so why talk about next year? I don't know the answer. Nobody knows. I don't care who wrote what article, or who tweeted what, nobody knows anything.”

Earlier yesterday, James updated a social media post with game photos, captioning it: “Just enjoying the moment.”
Indeed, we just watch James enjoy the moment, happily finishing his final career stages.
