Deandre Ayton was briefly detained for allegedly carrying a small amount of marijuana! He has since been released, and the Lakers have not yet commented.

On February 18th Beijing time, his lawyer and two insiders confirmed to Reuters that Los Angeles Lakers center Deandre Ayton was briefly detained today at Lynden Pindling International Airport in the Bahamas on suspicion of carrying a small amount of marijuana.

Sources reported that Ayton, who holds Bahamian citizenship, was arrested and held after marijuana was discovered. However, Ayton’s lawyer Francis told Reuters that Ayton was not arrested but only briefly detained and has since been released.

“Investigators confirmed that the very small amount of marijuana involved was not found in Ayton’s luggage, but they still followed protocol to conduct an inquiry, after which he was quickly released,” Francis said.

The lawyer stated that the marijuana belonged to someone else’s luggage. The Royal Bahamas Police Force said witnesses saw Ayton smoking marijuana in the airport area. The Lakers have not issued any comment on the matter yet.

Although the Bahamas has legalized marijuana for medical and religious purposes, recreational use remains illegal in the country. The former NBA top draft pick signed a two-year contract with the Lakers last summer, having previously played for the Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers. He missed his second consecutive Lakers game last Friday.

So far this season, Ayton has played 46 games for the Lakers, averaging 13.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game with a shooting percentage of 67.5%. The Lakers currently hold a 33-21 record, ranking fifth in the Western Conference.
