On February 17th Beijing time, Durant’s suspected alternate account caused a stir. The account reportedly criticized teammates from his Rockets and Suns days. Commentator Bill Simmons openly said that rumors don’t arise without cause. Some fake news outlets took advantage to spread false claims that the NBA would look into Durant’s alternate account.

Throughout his career, Durant has never lacked controversy. This 37-year-old star participated in this weekend’s All-Star Champions Game, joining LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard on Team USA Stripes. However, this veteran superstar squad suffered a heavy 21-47 defeat to Team USA Stars in the final. Still, Durant continues to dominate trending topics due to negative news.
Social media platforms and fan forums are once again buzzing over Durant’s social media accounts. Recently, posts have claimed that the NBA star uses an alternate account to criticize his own teammates. There are even rumors that the league is conducting a thorough investigation into Durant’s social media, but American media state these claims lack any foundation.
NBA fans are well aware that conspiracy theories like this about Durant stem from his past.
As early as 2017, some tweets surfaced on social media showing Durant criticizing Thunder management, former coach Billy Donovan, and even then-teammate Russell Westbrook. When asked about it, Durant admitted those comments were “stupid” and “immature,” but also confessed he did have an Instagram alternate account to interact with fans and friends.
Although he acknowledged this, the league has never launched any formal investigation or punishment against him.
In fact, the only time the league took action on similar behavior was in 2018:
The 76ers’ general manager Bryan Colangelo was exposed for using multiple anonymous Twitter accounts to criticize Embiid and Fultz. The investigation ultimately revealed that these accounts were operated by his wife, leading to Colangelo’s resignation.
This round of rumors about Durant will most likely just become meme material for fans and is unlikely to trigger an actual league investigation.
Based on past NBA practices, the league only intervenes when leaks or real harm occur (such as in the Colangelo case).
American media have shared some statements allegedly from Durant’s alternate account; however, there is currently no concrete evidence proving these posts were made by Durant himself—

Statement 1: The coach’s strategy is just to pass the ball to Alperen (Şengün), hilarious. In this lousy team, I’m the one making mistakes, and I don’t care. Your star player can neither shoot nor defend, which is a way bigger problem than my errors. Remember, these people are your future. These Rockets fans got triggered and started...
Statement 2: I don’t believe Jabari (Smith Jr.) can make a single shot or stop a possession. Honestly, don’t even let him take technical free throws. He’s secretly an idiot.
Statement 3: The days with Devin Booker and Vogel... It’s all because Booker came back... two dictators... When we lose, the Suns are my team; when we win, it’s Booker’s team.
Statement 4: I really have to laugh, or I’d cry. I swear, I miss Ben Simmons. At least that guy would pass me the ball.

Pundit Bill Simmons also discussed the recent Durant alternate account incident on his podcast: “I think there’s no smoke without fire. If all this is true, and he’s criticizing teammates he still plays alongside, then we may have never seen a situation like this — a social media scandal exposing proof he’s trash-talking his own teammates, yet still has to play with them.”
