Ten teams once showed interest in signing him! Sohan decides to join the Knicks: adding depth to multiple positions for New York

On February 13th Beijing time, according to reporter Shams, Jeremy Sohan intends to join the New York Knicks once his waiver period ends.

The Knicks currently have one available roster spot and have freed up salary space through transactions before the trade deadline. They are under the second luxury tax line with sufficient cap space to sign Sohan right away, without delaying until the latter part of the season. As long as the signing is completed before March 2nd, he will be eligible to participate in the playoffs.

As ESPN’s Bobby Marks pointed out, the Knicks’ salary went from $148,000 below the second luxury tax line last week to $1,148,358. This amount allows them to sign Sohan to a prorated veteran minimum deal while still staying under the luxury tax threshold. After this season ends, Sohan will become a free agent again.

Sohan was waived by the Spurs on Friday following mutual agreement between him and the team.Shams noted that after the waiver period, ten teams expressed interest in him. His salary this season is $7.1 million and is expiring, making it nearly impossible for other teams to claim him off waivers.

As the 9th overall pick in the 2022 draft, Sohan fell out of the Spurs' rotation starting in December and was considered a potential trade candidate before the deadline. It was reported that the Spurs allowed his agent to seek a new team before February 6th, with the Knicks being one of the teams interested in acquiring him via trade.

During his first three seasons with the Spurs, Sohan started a total of 149 games, averaging 27.3 minutes per game, contributing 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists.

He can provide the Knicks with depth across multiple positions, and his defensive skills will be valuable during the playoffs. Sohan’s main weakness is his outside shooting, with a career three-point shooting percentage of only 28.7%.
