The Spurs have officially announced the release of Sohan! While his defense is well-rounded, his shooting remains a weakness, and several teams are expected to show interest in signing him.

On February 12th, Beijing time, the San Antonio Spurs officially announced they have cut Jeremy Sohan. During this season, Sohan appeared in 28 out of 53 games for the Spurs, averaging 12.8 minutes, 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game.

The Spurs chose Sohan with the 9th pick in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft. Over his four seasons with San Antonio, this Baylor University alumnus averaged 25.3 minutes, contributing 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.

Currently, the Spurs’ roster consists of 17 players.

As the 9th pick in the 2022 draft, Sohan has dropped out of the Spurs’ rotation this season and was considered a potential trade asset before last week’s deadline. Although he was not included in any of the Spurs’ trades at the deadline (San Antonio was one of only three teams that made no midseason trades), he still has a chance for a fresh start before the season ends.

Despite being a dependable and versatile defender who held a steady role in rotations under Popovich and Mitch Johnson for years, Sohan’s shooting has been a limitation, with a career three-point percentage of just 28.7%. Moreover, the Spurs never seemed to fully settle on how to use him — he has been deployed at point guard, small-ball center, and nearly every position in between at different times.

If no team claims Sohan’s expiring $7.1 million contract (which appears likely), he will become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any NBA team directly.According to Shams, multiple teams are expected to express interest in him.
