On November 21, Beijing time, according to ESPN, Suns owner Matt Ishbia revealed that he plans to offer Durant a two-year contract extension of about $120 million next summer.
Durant has been eligible to sign a one-year, $59.5 million early extension since early July, but he can only sign a one-year extension due to the 38-year-old rule, and if he waits until next offseason, he will be eligible to sign a two-year contract extension worth up to $123.8 million.
Ishbia told ESPN that both sides want an agreement that will bring both sides closer to their goal of having the 14-time NBA All-Star finally retire in Phoenix.
"[Durant] loves being in Phoenix, and we love him," Ishbia told ESPN, "and he's had a fantastic start to the season — he's one of the MVP frontrunners — and we've had a really good start." We hope Kevin will sign a contract extension and stay with us for the long term. We want him to finish his career in Phoenix. You couldn't sign a two-year contract extension last summer, and you can't do that under NBA rules. So we wanted to talk about it after the season and deal with it. Kevin wants to stay here, and we want Kevin to stay here. ”
Durant signed a four-year, $194 million early extension in 2021 with an existing contract that expires after the 2025-26 season. Durant is sidelined with a calf injury and has not played in the last seven games. Phoenix started the season with an 8-1 record, while Durant had a 1-6 record in his absence.
Referring to Durant, Ishbia also said: "If he doesn't agree with something, he'll tell you." If you message him and ask him, he'll get back to you and tell you, 'That's what I thought.' The 36-year-old Durant is averaging 27.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game this season.
