The Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Cardinals at home today, with their lineup firing on all cylinders. Sluggers Max Muncy and Teoscar Hernández each hit two home runs, resulting in a 12-6 win for the Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani added two hits, closing in on his career milestone of 1,000 hits in the majors.
The Dodgers launched their attack in the first inning with Shohei Ohtani hitting a double. He then advanced to third base on Mookie Betts' groundout. Following that, Freddie Freeman's sacrifice fly put the team on the scoreboard. Muncy then blasted a home run to right-center field, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead over the Cardinals.
In the bottom of the third inning, Muncy struck again, hitting a two-run homer to right field. Immediately after, Hernández followed up with a solo homer, marking back-to-back home runs and extending the Dodgers' lead to 5-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals managed to score one run, but in the bottom half, the Dodgers' offense exploded. They scored one run on a walk and a hit, followed by a three-run homer from Hernández, putting the Dodgers ahead 9-3. Rookie Alex Freeland's hit added to the tally, resulting in a five-run inning for the Dodgers.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers added two more runs, ultimately defeating the Cardinals by six runs. Shohei Ohtani's two hits brought his career total in the majors to 999, just one hit away from an incredible historical milestone. He is set to become the third Japanese player to accumulate 1,000 hits in the majors, following Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui.
On another note, Betts finally broke out of his recent slump, contributing three hits in this game and ending a streak of five games with no hits in 20 at-bats. This proved that manager Dave Roberts' decision to keep Betts in the top lineup was the right one.
Previously, when asked if he considered moving Betts down the lineup to relieve pressure, Roberts stated that Betts is a top-tier player capable of overcoming challenges, expressing full confidence in him. Just a few days ago, when struggling, Betts was seen leaving the field with a serious expression, but now he has achieved success, lifting a significant psychological burden.
