All-Star rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski has been placed on the injured list due to a tibial contusion.

The Brewers have seen a second star player land on the injured list in the past three days, as the team today placed rookie All-Star pitcher Jacob Misiorowski on the 15-day injured list due to a left tibial contusion, retroactive to last Friday.

This comes just two days after outfielder Jackson Chourio was placed on the injured list due to a right hamstring strain.

Misiorowski was scheduled to start in the series finale against the Nationals, but his spot has been taken by Logan Henderson, who has been recalled from Triple-A Nashville as part of the corresponding move. Henderson is the Brewers' fifth-ranked prospect and has appeared in four games for Milwaukee this season, including three starts when José Quintana went on the injured list in May. Henderson has a record of 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA over 21 innings pitched.

In today’s game at Nationals Park, Henderson performed similarly, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing just one run, giving up three hits, walking two, and striking out four in the team’s 14-3 blowout victory. This win—Milwaukee's third consecutive game with double-digit hits, highlighted by Brice Turang's career-first home run (two home runs)—helped the Brewers achieve their first-ever series sweep over the Nationals.

“I thought Logan did a great job,” said manager Pat Murphy. “You know, he’s been tested now. How many starts has he made? Five? He’s given us a chance to win in all five of those starts.”

The Brewers have won all five games that Henderson has started, although he did not earn a win in two of them. His family was even in attendance on Sunday, as his father and stepmother had intended to watch him pitch for the Sounds in Scranton, Pa., on Saturday but then he was scratched and sent to D.C.—so they drove him there since there were no flights available at the time.

Henderson is expected to get another start next weekend against the Mets, which will allow Misiorowski to return on August 15 for the series opener against Cincinnati.

“I was just looking for another opportunity,” Henderson said. “I’m really happy to be here. [My] goal today was to help the team, and I’m glad the guys won.”

For Misiorowski, this season has been full of “firsts,” as he made his debut on June 13 and earned an All-Star selection with five impressive starts. This is his first time on the injured list in his career (he had been on the minor league injured list while playing for Double-A Biloxi in 2023). The 23-year-old has a record of 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA over seven starts, and prior to today, he had thrown 112 pitches over 100 mph, second in the majors behind Hunter Greene of the Reds.

Today’s start was supposed to be an opportunity for Misiorowski to showcase his growth. Last Tuesday, in a game against the Cubs, he had a rough first inning where he threw 40 pitches, including a hard line drive from Seiya Suzuki that struck his left tibia, causing the contusion.

At the time, Misiorowski didn’t experience any major issues from the contusion, and he received praise from the team for how he completed that start: retiring 10 consecutive batters and pitching three scoreless innings. However, his tibia did not heal as quickly as he or the team had hoped. During bullpen sessions earlier in the week, he still felt soreness, and the team noticed a slight drop in his velocity.

“We noticed it this week—actually, it was our pitching coaches who noticed it this week—in the throwing program and the bullpen sessions, something wasn’t right,” manager Pat Murphy said. “We want to take care of this kid smartly. He has a bright future, and we hope—he’s going to want to push through because he’s young, but we want to prevent him from making those kinds of decisions unless we know he’s 100 percent healthy.”

Although Misiorowski certainly wanted—and is eager—to play through the injury, it was ultimately decided to place him on the injured list. He will miss two starts but plans to continue throwing during his rehab process so he can be ready after the minimum time on the list.

“Basically, it’s just, ‘It is what it is,’” Misiorowski said. “Obviously, I tried to fight it, tried to keep pitching, but I understand. And, you know, they’re looking out for me.”

In some ways, this move is a blessing in disguise, as it will help the Brewers manage Misiorowski's innings more effectively without prematurely limiting his pitch count or innings in individual games.

“Yeah, I mean, this is obviously going to help limit my innings and stuff,” Misiorowski said. “Two starts are scratched. So, I mean—but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. It’s just, you know, [I’ll] pitch until the end of the season.”
