The Red Sox strengthened their rotation depth by trading for Dustin May, acquiring two outfield prospects from the Dodgers.

On the trade deadline, the Red Sox struck a last-minute deal with the Dodgers, sending outfield prospect James Tibbs III (ranked 5th in the Red Sox farm system) and Zach Ehrhard (27th) in exchange for right-handed pitcher Dustin May. This trade came just five days after May pitched at Fenway Park (where he allowed 4 runs over 5 innings, helping the Red Sox win 4-3).

Trade Details
Red Sox receive: Right-handed pitcher Dustin May
Dodgers receive: Outfielder James Tibbs III (5th in Red Sox prospects), Outfielder Zach Ehrhard (27th)

At 27, May has pitched a career-high 104 innings this season, with a record of 6 wins and 7 losses, and an earned run average of 4.85. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow stated, "May is a proven starter from a postseason-winning team, and he will immediately enhance our rotation."

The Red Sox initially aimed to pursue top pitchers like Joe Ryan but were unsuccessful. "We were determined to acquire multiple impactful players," Breslow admitted, "but despite our efforts, it was not due to a lack of ambition or fear of costs."

May's salary this season is $2.135 million, and he will become a free agent after the season. Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes explained the decision to let him go: "May values his starting role, while the Dodgers' rotation is becoming saturated. Although his bullpen value is significant, respecting the player's wishes led to a win-win situation."

Previously, the Red Sox acquired left-hander Steven Matz from the Cardinals but failed to strengthen their first-base lineup. "We spent a lot of time seeking upgrades for the lineup," Breslow confirmed, "but ultimately did not find the right candidates."

May will join a rotation that includes Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Walker Buehler. "There’s no need to define his role," Breslow emphasized, "his performance over the next two months will prove his value."

May has undergone two right elbow surgeries and an esophagus repair surgery last year, but this season he has become the most durable starter for the Dodgers. Breslow promised not to limit his pitch count: "He is in good shape, his velocity continues to rise, and we will provide regular recovery support."

At just 22, Tibbs joined the Red Sox farm system less than two months ago, posting a batting line of .207/.319/.267 over 116 plate appearances in Double-A Portland; Ehrhard has a batting average of .267 with 9 home runs and 45 RBIs over 322 plate appearances in High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland this season.
