Jesse Chavez, possibly the player with the most trades in Major League history, has officially announced his retirement.

After 18 seasons with 9 teams and experiencing 10 trades, right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez has decided to hang up his cleats.

The 41-year-old Chavez announced this decision today on the "Foul Territory" show. Just a week ago, the Atlanta Braves removed him from their 40-man roster for the third time this season—this being the team he spent the most time with in his career.

"Honestly, I haven't touched a baseball since my last pitch on July 14 in St. Louis," Chavez said, "It's time to turn the page and focus on a new chapter in life."

The player, selected by the Rangers in the 42nd round of the 2002 draft (from Riverside City College in California), made his Major League debut with the Pirates in 2008. He was first traded to the Braves after the 2009 season, beginning a long relationship with the team. Throughout his career, apart from the Braves (from 2010's first season to 2025's last), he also played for the Royals, Blue Jays (twice), Athletics, Dodgers, Angels (twice), Rangers (twice), and Cubs (twice).

Chavez appeared in 657 Major League games, with 85 of those as a starter, but primarily served as a relief pitcher. He accumulated a career record of 51 wins and 66 losses, with an ERA of 4.27. Despite moving between many teams (believed to be the player with the most trades in Major League history), he performed particularly well with the Braves: over six fragmented seasons, he had an ERA of 3.30, striking out 228 batters in 229.1 innings pitched. This does not include his postseason performance in 2021 during the Braves' championship run, where he had a 0.00 ERA in 7 playoff appearances.

"This journey exceeded my expectations—it's already great for a 42nd-round draft pick," Chavez told the show hosts. "I always sought ways to adjust and prolong my career. Leaving the game still feels like my debut: I could wake up and pitch. Thankfully, I still have that ability."
