The Red Sox's journey this season has been a rollercoaster ride, starting the new season as strong playoff contenders after signing Alex Bregman and trading for Garrett Crochet during the offseason. However, by the end of June, the Red Sox had a record of only 42 wins and 44 losses, struggling to maintain consistent performance, especially amidst the trade drama involving Rafael Devers—culminating in a significant trade with the Giants on June 16.
After that, the Red Sox surged, finishing the first half of the season with a ten-game winning streak, making a strong return to the playoff race. Craig Breslow, the Red Sox's Chief Baseball Officer, detailed the team's trading strategy, the impact of the Devers trade, and recent successes during an interview with MLB Network Radio.
Currently, the Red Sox have a record of 54 wins and 47 losses, holding one of the American League's wild card spots, and they are only five games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East championship race. Recent successes have prompted Breslow to plan for roster enhancements before the trade deadline.
"We are evaluating our performance over the past month and looking to strengthen the team's capabilities before the trade deadline. Our needs may change dynamically," Breslow stated.
He revealed that they might strengthen the first base lineup and indicated that the starting rotation is another key area of focus. After months of discussions regarding the possibility of trading Bregman (the Red Sox third baseman has the option to opt-out after a three-year, $120 million contract), the team now leans toward being buyers before the deadline.
Breslow admitted that the decision to trade Devers was exceptionally difficult.
“He is a core hitter who gives opponents headaches and can perfectly support the middle of the lineup,” Breslow said, “but the reality is that the team has not met the expected win total, and overall performance has not exceeded the sum of individual strengths. We have many standout individual performances, yet they have not translated into enough wins.”
A dramatic turn followed Devers' trade: the Red Sox began a season comeback. It is essential to clarify that this is not attributed to Devers causing the early-season slump—he has given his all offensively. However, about two weeks after the trade, the Red Sox went on a ten-game winning streak, re-entering the playoff race.
“We have excelled on both offense and defense, showcasing the traits of a young, vibrant team,” Breslow commented, “with aggressive baserunning, excellent outfield defense, and continuous pressure on opponents. If you observe the recent performances of the rotation, Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello have pitched exceptionally well, while Crochet has been a crucial asset since his first pitch of the season.”
