Blake Snell pitched 4 innings for the Triple-A Oklahoma City team today in his third rehab start, throwing 58 pitches. He faced the Giants' Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, recording 6 strikeouts, allowing 4 hits, issuing 1 walk, and giving up 1 run.
During this rehab assignment, Snell has accumulated 9 innings with an impressive total of 17 strikeouts. His previous two rehab outings were with the Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and the Dodgers' Arizona Complex League affiliate.
Manager Dave Roberts stated that Snell will make one more start in the minor leagues, aiming for 5 innings pitched, after which the team will consider bringing him back into the Dodgers' rotation.
Relief right-hander Blake Treinen also made his fifth rehab appearance in the same game, pitching 1 scoreless inning and recording 2 strikeouts. Given that he has already pitched in two games within three days (having just played for the Quakes on Saturday), Treinen’s final benchmark will be to complete back-to-back appearances next week.
Snell joined the Dodgers last offseason on a five-year, $182 million contract but has been on the injured list since April 7 (retroactive to April 4) due to left shoulder inflammation. In his two previous starts, he pitched a total of 9 innings, allowing 7 runs (only 2 earned).
Once Snell returns, the candidates for the rotation's edge are likely to be Dustin May and Emmet Sheehan. May has already exceeded his career single-season innings total, and his next outing will be in relief of Shohei Ohtani; meanwhile, Sheehan just had his worst start of the season (giving up 5 runs in 3.1 innings last Sunday) and still has options available for demotion.
