The Washington Nationals completed a magical three-kill at home

In the fourth game of the series opener at Nationals today, the Washington Nationals made three kills against the New York Mets. It was the first home kill in the history of the Nationals (2005 to the present) and the first 3-3-6 triple kill in the major leagues since the Twin Cities vs. Rangers on August 22, 2022.

National pitcher Jake Irvin faced Jesse Winker when first base runner Mark Vientos and second base runner Brandon Nimmo started stealing bases. Wink hit a fly ball to first base, and first baseman Nathaniel Lowe received the ball in the low post and passed to shortstop CJ Abrams, who was on second base, to block Ventos, who then returned to first base to complete the triple stab.

Wenk and Mets coach Carlos Mendoza have called for a retrial, questioning whether Lowe missed the catch (the ball touched the ground first). According to MLB Retrial Rules: "A referee's determination of whether the outfielder received a flyball/flat ball before the ball touched the ground may be reviewed, but the infielder's similar catch decision cannot be reviewed." The verdict was upheld.

The triple kill was originally recorded as the first by the American Association for the Study of Baseball (SABR) since June 6, 1989 (3-6-3 triple kill for Mets vs. Cubs) and was later revised to a 3-3-6 type. The third three-kill in the history of the Nationals includes: away to the Giants on July 29, 2016 and away to the Brewers on May 20, 2022. The last time the Mets were killed three times in their history was on June 10, 2010 against the Padres.
