Muncy's clutch hit ties "Penguin" Cey, moving up to fifth on Dodgers' all-time home run list

With each trip around the bases, Max Muncy carved his legacy further into the storied history of this franchise, which dates back to the 1800s.

At Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park today, Muncy kept climbing the Dodgers' all-time leaderboard. He hit his 19th homer of the season, a two-run shot that became the difference-maker in a 2-1 win over the Phillies in the rain. It was the 228th home run of Muncy's career in a Dodgers uniform, tying him with Ron "The Penguin" Cey for fifth place on the franchise's all-time list.

The four Dodgers legends ahead of Muncy and Cey are: Duke Snider (389), Gil Hodges (361), Eric Karros (270), and Roy Campanella (242).

That night, Justin Wrobleski engaged in a pitcher's duel with Philadelphia's Zack Wheeler, which meant the game would not feature a scoring explosion like the relentless rain that delayed the start by 1 hour and 20 minutes. Although Wrobleski gave up a run in the first inning, he edged out Wheeler on the very mound where he had made his All-Star debut just a week earlier, gaining a slight upper hand.

Wheeler is among the top pitchers in the league this season, but the Dodgers have gotten the better of him in both regular-season meetings. On May 29 at Dodger Stadium, they scored a season-high-tying four runs off him via four solo home runs, one of which came from Muncy.

In today's game, Wheeler pitched more cautiously, tossing seven innings with nine strikeouts. However, in the fourth inning, after Andy Pages reached first base, Wheeler's first cutter to Muncy was slightly off-target, drifting too close to the heart of the strike zone. Muncy swung hard, sending the ball to center field at an exit velocity of 102.4 mph, traveling 421 feet. This big hit not only gave the Dodgers the lead but also moved Muncy one step further up the historical record books.

On a night when Wrobleski was in top form, that key hit was enough to secure the win for the Dodgers. He pitched 6.1 innings, striking out seven. Tanner Scott locked down the victory with a five-out save. This narrow win also set the stage for a decisive rubber match in Philadelphia tomorrow.
