Abreu hits two homers in consecutive games, extending Boston Red Sox's winning streak to 12

The hot-hitting slugger became the first Boston Red Sox player since Mookie Betts in June 2016 to hit multiple home runs in back-to-back games.

The streak continues. Wilyer Abreu launched two home runs in a single game, including the go-ahead blast in the bottom of the seventh inning that gave his team the lead. The Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 at Fenway Park today, extending the longest winning streak in Major League Baseball this season to 12 games.

Entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Red Sox trailed by three runs. But thanks to Abreu's remarkable second straight multi-homer game, Boston rallied and took a one-run lead. In achieving this feat, Abreu became the first Red Sox player since Mookie Betts in June 2016 to do so.

With one out and a runner on second base, facing Rays reliever Garrett Cleavinger, Abreu first took three straight balls, then watched two strikes go by. After seeing five pitches, Abreu finally got the one he wanted. He swung hard and crushed a fastball into a home run that travelled 412 feet, according to Statcast, landing in right-center field. It was his 15th home run of the season, sending the crowd of 33,077 into a frenzy.

In the eighth and ninth innings, Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman successively shut down the Rays' lineup to preserve the win. This marked the Red Sox's first 12-game winning streak since June 16-29, 2006, and the victory also pushed their winning percentage above .500 for the first time since their Opening Day record of 1-0.

Additionally, this was the first time this season that the Red Sox came back to win after trailing by three runs. Previously, they had a record of 0-34 in such situations this season.
