Cole's worst game since returning from injury! 5.1 innings, three home runs allowed, ending his consecutive scoreless streak at 13.2 innings.

Having thrown 12.2 innings without allowing a run in his first two games after his return, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole saw his scoreless streak end on June 4 and was battered by three homers, exiting after only 5.1 innings—his briefest start since coming back.

In the first inning, Cole needed just eight pitches to retire the Cleveland Guardians in order, but he surrendered a leadoff solo home run in the top of the second, ending his streak of consecutive scoreless innings at 13.2. After giving up the run, Cole used five pitches to retire the next three batters to end the top half. In the bottom of the second, Yankees leadoff hitter Jazz Chisholm Jr. smashed his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot that tied the game.

Cole delivered his second three-up, three-down inning in the top of the third. In the top of the fourth, with two outs, the Guardians hit a two-run homer to take a 3–1 lead. That inning saw six Guardians come to the plate, the most Cole faced through the first four frames. In the bottom of the fourth, José Caballero crushed his fifth homer of the year, bringing the Yankees within 2–3.

Cole recorded his third 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Guardians leadoff batter José Ramírez launched his ninth homer of the season, extending the lead to 4–2. With one out, Cole allowed a double and then issued a walk before being pulled. The reliever retired the next two batters to avoid further damage.

In this start, Cole threw 83 pitches over 5.1 innings, with 56 strikes. He recorded two strikeouts and one walk, gave up six hits—including three home runs—and allowed four earned runs, marking his first start with earned runs since returning from injury.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees closed to 3–4 on a sacrifice fly by Cody Bellinger. In the bottom of the ninth, Bellinger hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, but the Yankees ultimately lost 4–5, and Cole took his first loss of the season.
