Yankees' outfield roster is saturated, "Martian" Domínguez performs excellently in spring training but still sent down to AAA.

The New York Yankees' outfield roster has no vacancies, "Martian" Jasson Domínguez cannot enter the opening season roster. This switch-hitting outfielder anticipated this situation upon reporting for spring training.

"As I said before spring training started," Domínguez recently stated, "I take it day by day, striving to do my job well. The final decision, I cannot control. I just try to live each day well and see what happens."

Before today's Grapefruit League game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees made the decision to send Domínguez down to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

This 23-year-old young player has done his utmost. In 14 games with 40 at-bats, he had 13 hits, a batting average of .325, contributing 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 10 RBIs, and 3 stolen bases.

However, the Yankees' offseason moves had already indicated he would return to the minor leagues. Domínguez had limited playing opportunities in the latter part of last season, only getting one pinch-hit opportunity in the playoffs.

General Manager Brian Cashman earlier this spring training stated, "Admitting that securing consistent playing opportunities aligns with his best interests."

This is difficult to guarantee in the Bronx, especially after the Yankees offered a $22.025 million qualifying offer to center fielder Trent Grisham last November. Previously, there were reports that Domínguez might compete with Spencer Jones for the left field position, but then Cody Bellinger re-signed in January with a 6-year $162.5 million contract. Aaron Judge has just won MVP for the third time in the past four years, Giancarlo Stanton will serve as designated hitter, and the Yankees prefer Randal Grichuk as a bench outfielder to handle left-handed pitchers.

Even so, Manager Aaron Boone still expressed belief that Domínguez will play a role in the team this season. In the 2025 season's 123 games, Domínguez's slash line was .257/.331/.388, contributing 10 home runs, 47 RBIs, and 23 stolen bases.

In another roster adjustment, the Yankees sent right-handed pitchers Kervin Castro and Yerry de los Santos down to AAA. Catchers Ali Sánchez, Payton Henry, and outfielder Kenedy Corona were reassigned to minor league spring training camp.
