Dodgers veteran Rojas wears custom Air Jordans to pay tribute to 90s baseball legends.

Miguel Rojas was among the many children of the 90s who aspired to play basketball like Michael Jordan.

Rojas attracted significant notice today, on his 37th birthday, by sporting a pair of Air Jordan baseball shoes similar to those worn by Michael Jordan during his short stint in baseball. However, the true inspiration for these black-and-white retro sneakers wasn't Jordan, but rather the baseball legends Rojas watched growing up in the 90s: Ken Griffey Jr., Omar Vizquel, Roberto Alomar, and others.

“I grew up watching those players and always wanted shoes like that,” Rojas said. “They’re hard to find now because they’re discontinued.”

Major League players once faced restrictions on shoe colors until the "51% rule" was abolished in 2019. Now, players can freely express their individuality, and footwear is no exception.

Rojas is known for his sneaker collection, which heavily features Air Jordans. In what may be his final season before retirement, the veteran infielder wanted to go retro, mixing in some baseball cleats that evoke the era when he first fell in love with the game.

Since this style is largely unavailable on the market, Rojas turned to custom creation. He collaborated with "Born to Create," a company specializing in custom apparel and footwear for athletes and celebrities, to bring his vision to life. The design process itself had a nostalgic touch: Rojas searched online for 90s sneaker catalogs, found styles he liked, and sent the references to the company.

The pair Rojas wore today, along with several others in his collection, are Jordan 1s designed with a 90s aesthetic, paying homage to both basketball and baseball. The result is strikingly authentic. Rojas mentioned that people have already asked him where he got the shoes, and he has to explain they aren't vintage but brand-new custom pieces.

“I think it's pretty cool and unique,” Rojas said. “Anyone who knows baseball from that era immediately recognizes the style.”

Having played over a dozen seasons in the majors, Rojas has carved out his own place in baseball history. During last year's World Series, he emerged as an unlikely hero, with a key defensive play and a game-tying home run in Game 7, helping the Dodgers complete a dramatic comeback to secure the championship.

That night, his Dodgers teammates said it was wonderful to see his long, understated career rewarded in such a moment. This year, Rojas is honoring the game in his own way, right down to the shoes on his feet.

“I just want to pay respect to the legends,” he said, “the ones who played before me.”
