Cubs' power hitter Long discusses withdrawal from Classic: Flying to opposite side of globe for rehab doesn't make sense

Chicago Cubs rookie first baseman Jonathon Long, originally slated to play for Chinese Taipei in this World Baseball Classic, formally pulled out on February 26 because of an elbow issue. On February 27, he shared his thoughts in an interview with MLB.com, expressing his desire to experience the Classic atmosphere but explaining that "flying to the other side of the world without knowing if I could swing a bat, and having to rehab there," led him to stay in the U.S. for Cubs spring training to compete for an Opening Day roster spot.

Long recently experienced elbow discomfort after a collision with a runner in a spring training game. Although he later resumed swinging drills and showed positive recovery signs, the team assessed that the injury still affected his swing and decided it was too risky for him to participate. Cubs manager Craig Counsell announced Long's withdrawal from the Classic, keeping him in the United States.

Explaining his decision to withdraw, Long said, "To fly to the other side of the world, not knowing if I could swing, and having to do my rehab there—compared to staying here, it didn't make sense, especially when preparing for the new season. Getting fully healthy is more important."

On another note, right-handed hitting first baseman Tyler Austin, signed by the Cubs in the offseason, is out due to right knee surgery, creating an opening at first base. Counsell mentioned in an interview that Long is one of the possible candidates to fill that spot.

Regarding external views that he has a chance to compete for an Opening Day roster position, Long stated he prefers not to overthink it. "Some external decisions are beyond my control. I'll focus on what I can control and put forth my best performance in spring training."
