The Houston Astros have signed a minor league contract with Cavan Biggio, son of the legendary Biggio.

Throughout the Houston Astros’ history, there has been just one father-son pair to play in the majors. That was in 2008 when José Cruz Jr., son of the iconic José Cruz, ended his career after his last 38 at-bats with the Astros.

The Cruz family might soon welcome a new member as the Astros signed Cavan Biggio, son of Hall of Fame second baseman Craig Biggio, to a minor league deal today. Cavan will join the team for training and a physical exam tomorrow.

Almost 31 years old, left-handed hitter Cavan has played 561 major league games, mostly with the Blue Jays (2019–2024). In 2024, he had brief stints with the Dodgers and Warriors, and last season appeared in 37 games for the Royals. He will compete for a bench spot with the Astros.

“I really like his bat,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “He’s a lefty who can play multiple positions, has a professional approach to plate discipline, and gets on base well. We look forward to having him here and giving him a chance to compete for a roster spot.”

Cavan is versatile defensively, having played every position except pitcher and catcher during his career. Last season with the Royals, he had 83 plate appearances, hitting .174/.296/.246 with one home run. Over 561 career games, his slash line stands at .223/.339/.373 with 52 homers and 33 stolen bases.

Craig Biggio spent his entire 20-year career with the Astros (1988–2007), holding franchise records for games played, plate appearances, hits, runs, total bases, doubles, and slugging. When Craig reached 3,000 career hits in 2007, Cavan and his brother Conor sat in the dugout wearing jerseys as batboys.
