The New York Yankees have signed Montero to a minor league deal, entering the competition for bullpen spots.

The Yankees are creating an open competition for several late-inning bullpen positions, and today they added a new competitor: right-hander Rafael Montero signed a minor league contract with a major league spring training invite.

Montero, 35, spent last season with the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, and Detroit Tigers, pitching in 59 games with a 1-2 record and a 4.48 ERA. In 60.1 innings, he allowed 42 hits, struck out 58 batters, and issued 37 walks.

“We liked some of his performances last season,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Maybe a few tweaks could help him. We hope he can put himself into the mix for a roster spot.”

Montero began the season with the Astros before being traded to the Braves on April 8 in exchange for right-hander Patrick Halligan. Before the July trade deadline, he was traded again to the Tigers for infielder Jim Jarvis.

His major league career also includes stints with the New York Mets, Texas Rangers, and Seattle Mariners, totaling 380 appearances (30 starts) with a 23-30 record, 30 saves, and a 4.68 ERA. In 2022, he won a World Series title with the Astros.

The Yankees’ bullpen is expected to be anchored by closer David Bednar, with Camilo Doval, Fernando Cruz, and Tim Hill handling high-leverage innings.

Paul Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough will be responsible for long relief, while Montero will join the competition alongside Jake Bird, Cade Winquest (Yankees’ No. 26 prospect according to MLB Pipeline), Brent Headrick, Angel Chivilli, and others.

“I’ve always said we have pitching depth—from starters to non-roster invitees, and those on the 40-man roster waiting for their chance, there are definitely some good options,” Boone said.
