The Chicago Cubs have reached a multi-year agreement with veteran relief pitcher Miller.

FanSided’s Robert Murray reports that the Chicago Cubs and veteran reliever Shelby Miller are nearing a multi-year MLB contract agreement, with the team not having officially announced it yet.

Miller is projected to sit out the entire 2026 season following right elbow surgery. He underwent ulnar collateral ligament and flexor tendon repair last October, and this multi-year deal will allow him to recover fully and return to pitch for the Cubs in 2027.

At 35 years old, Miller played for both the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers during the 2025 season, appearing in 48 games and pitching 46 innings with 54 strikeouts and an earned run average of 2.74.

Arm injuries have been a persistent issue throughout Miller’s career. When the Brewers acquired him before last year’s trade deadline, he was on the injured list due to a right forearm strain. After returning, he delivered high-quality innings in high-leverage situations, but on September 1 against the Philadelphia Phillies, he suddenly felt a popping sensation in his elbow, which ended his season. Miller also underwent Tommy John surgery back in 2017.

This will be Miller’s second stint with the Cubs, having briefly played for them in 2021 during his transition from starter to reliever. That year, he only appeared in three games before being released in May. After moving between the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants, Miller revitalized his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023 and has since been a reliable late-inning relief pitcher.
