Veteran left-hander Quintana signs a one-year deal with the Colorado Rockies.

According to ESPN reporter Jesse Rogers, veteran left-handed pitcher Jose Quintana has reached a one-year contract agreement with the Colorado Rockies. The team has not yet officially confirmed the deal, but according to FanSided reporter Robert Murray, the contract is worth $6 million.

Quintana’s career has been long and steady; even in his late thirties, he remains a reliable back-end starter. In 2025, at age 36, Quintana pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers, posting a 3.96 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP over 131.2 innings. Over the past four seasons, he recorded an ERA under 4.00 in three campaigns with at least 130 innings pitched, with the only exception being 2023 when he posted a 3.57 ERA over 75.2 innings.

In 2021, Quintana hit a career low, posting a 6.43 ERA across 63 innings, raising doubts about his ability to remain a quality starter. However, he revived his performance afterward; since 2022, he has accumulated a 3.53 ERA over 100 starts, ranking him among the top 40 pitchers who have thrown at least 300 innings in that span.

Despite his steady performance, Quintana showed some concerning metrics during the 2026 season. His strikeout rate dropped to 16.0%, the lowest since his rookie year in 2012 (14.3%). Additionally, his 4.81 FIP marked a career high, and his 5.18 expected ERA (xERA) was the worst since Statcast tracking began in 2015. Considering Quintana will turn 37 before the season opener, these figures are especially noteworthy.

Over the course of his career, from his rookie season to now, Quintana has posted a 3.76 ERA across 2101.1 innings, quietly establishing himself as one of the better starters in the league over the past decade. While time affects every pitcher, Quintana has consistently provided quality innings in the back end of competitive rotations in recent years. Given his past performance, it would be unwise to underestimate the veteran’s potential contributions in the upcoming season.
