Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported today that the Chicago White Sox have agreed to a one-year deal with right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde. The team has not officially confirmed this yet, and the contract will take effect after Fedde passes his medical examination.
Approaching 33 years old, Fedde experienced a breakthrough in his career during the 2024 season. While playing for the White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, he started 31 games with an ERA of just 3.30 and contributed a 5.6 bWAR. However, this strong performance did not continue into early 2025, when he appeared in 25 games (24 starts) for the Cardinals and Brewers, posting a 4-12 record with a high 5.76 ERA. On average, he pitched only 5 innings per start, allowed a .279 batting average against, had a WHIP of 1.57, and his strikeout rate of 13.3% ranked near the bottom of the league.
A turning point came on August 27. Three days after being released by the Brewers, Fedde signed with Milwaukee as a free agent, transitioning to a full-time relief pitcher role. In the final stretch of the season, he appeared in 7 games, pitching 16 innings with a reduced ERA of 3.38, including four consecutive scoreless outings. During this period, he held opposing hitters to a .186 batting average and a WHIP of 1.13, showing potential as a quality long reliever.
Fedde’s arsenal includes a sinker, cutter, slider, and changeup, but last year only his slider and changeup were consistently effective. Opponents hit just .191 against his slider with a swing-and-miss rate of 26%, while his changeup limited hitters to a .212 average.
This right-hander, who has played for the Nationals, White Sox, Cardinals, Brewers, and Warriors over eight major league seasons, holds a cumulative record of 34-55 with a 4.94 ERA across 772.2 innings pitched. Returning to the White Sox, he will add more depth and options to their starting rotation.
