The Yankees bolstered their roster with a flexible depth piece, acquiring infielder Max Schuemann from the Athletics in exchange for minor league righty Luis Burgos.
The 28-year-old Schuemann will provide manager Aaron Boone and his coaching staff with an additional bench option during spring training this year, competing alongside Oswaldo Cabrera and Amed Rosario, who are already on the roster. Paul DeJong has also been invited to spring training as a non-roster player.
At 28, Schuemann appeared in 101 games for the Athletics in 2025, hitting .197 (36 hits in 183 at-bats) with 2 home runs and 13 RBIs. Defensively, he has experience playing second base, third base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions.

During his two major league seasons with the Athletics (2024-25), the right-handed batter posted a slash line of .212/.306/.297 across 234 games, hitting 9 home runs and driving in 47 runs.
The 20-year-old Burgos spent two seasons (2024-25) in the Yankees’ minor league system, appearing in 25 games (10 starts) with a 3.39 ERA. In 2025, he pitched for the Dominican Summer League Bombers at the rookie level, making 11 appearances (8 starts) and recording a 3-4 record with a 2.44 ERA.
To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated outfielder Yanquiel Fernández for assignment today. Once first baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s $4 million one-year contract is finalized, the team plans additional moves to add him to the roster.
Additionally, the Yankees optioned right-hander Dom Hamel and infielder Braden Shewmake to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, removing them from the major league roster. Both Hamel and Shewmake were invited to the 2026 major league spring training as non-roster players.
