Super Bowl 60: Seahawks defeat Patriots 29-13 to claim their second team title after 12 years

Super Bowl 60 took place on February 9 at Levi's Stadium, the home field of the San Francisco 49ers. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots faced off in the Super Bowl again after 11 years. The Seahawks secured victory with two touchdowns and five successful field goals by kicker Jason Myers, winning 29-13. This not only avenged their loss to the Patriots 11 years ago but also earned the Seahawks their second Super Bowl championship in franchise history (their first was at Super Bowl 48).

Less than three minutes into the game, Myers scored first with a 33-yard field goal for the Seahawks. Then Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was sacked twice in a row by Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, severely limiting New England’s offense. The first quarter ended with the Seahawks leading 3-0.

In the second quarter, Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold advanced the offense again, helping Myers kick a 39-yard field goal to extend the lead to 6-0. Maye was sacked for the third time as the Seahawks’ defense showed great strength. Before halftime, Myers added another 41-yard field goal, giving Seattle a 9-0 lead going into the break.

The Seahawks offense surged again in the third quarter, ending once more with Myers’ 41-yard field goal. Patriots quarterback Maye suffered his fourth sack and fumbled the ball with 10 seconds left in the quarter, which was recovered by the Seahawks. Maye struggled throughout the first three quarters, with Seattle maintaining a 12-0 lead.

The Patriots became the first team since Super Bowl 1974 to score zero points through three quarters. In the final quarter, Seahawks quarterback Darnold connected with tight end Phoenix Bannar for a 16-yard touchdown pass, pushing the score to 19-0. Facing a dire situation, the Patriots quickly responded as Maye threw a 35-yard touchdown pass in under a minute, finally putting points on the board.

Desperate to catch up, Maye threw an interception to Seahawks safety Julian Love with 8 minutes and 37 seconds remaining, instantly turning the momentum. Myers then kicked a 26-yard field goal with 5 minutes and 38 seconds left, increasing Seattle’s lead to 15 points. Maye was sacked again and fumbled, allowing linebacker Uchenna Nwosu to return the ball 44 yards for the Seahawks’ second touchdown.

With the score at 29-7 and less than five minutes remaining, the Seahawks were nearly certain to win. Although Maye threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to running back R. Stevenson with 2 minutes and 21 seconds left, the two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Patriots trailing 13-29. Forced to punt, the Patriots turned the ball back over to the Seahawks.

The Patriots could only use timeouts to stop the clock afterward. Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker broke through for a touchdown run but it was called back due to a teammate’s penalty. After two official timeouts, the Seahawks punted to give the Patriots one last chance. Maye’s attempts at long passes were unsuccessful, and the game clock expired, with the Seahawks ultimately winning by 16 points.
