Veteran pitcher Carrasco has a minor league contract with the New York Yankees

Carlos Carrasco may soon return to New York, but this time, the right pitcher's home stadium will be in the Bronx.

According to sources telling MLB's Mark Feinsand, the Yankees agreed to a minor league contract with Carrasco on Monday. The contract was first reported by YES Network's Jack Curry, but has yet to be officially confirmed by the team.

According to MLB Network insider Joel Sherman, Carrasco will receive a base salary of $1.5 million if he moves up to the major leagues, with the opportunity to earn a total of $2.5 million through performance bonuses.

Carrasco will turn 38 on March 21 and played for the New York Mets in 2021-2023. However, he spent most of his career in Cleveland, and in 2024 he returns to the Cleveland Guardians to complete his 12th major league season with the team.

Last year, Carrasco started 21 games for the Guardians, pitched 103.2 innings, and had a 3-10 record with a 5.64 ERA. According to Baseball Savant, his chase rate (31.3%) still ranks in the top 79% of the league.

In his 15-year career in the major leagues, Carrasco had a 4.14 ERA in 324 games (277 starts) and had a wealth of experience. His early days in Cleveland were particularly impressive, with 2017 being his best season when he tied for the top league pitch with 18 wins and made 200 innings in 32 starts for a 3.29 ERA to finish fourth in the American League Young Awards.

Carrasco is not far from the last quality season. In 2022, he started 29 games for the Mets, pitched 152 innings, and won 15 games, with a 3.97 ERA.

Carrasco was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in 2019 and missed three months of play, but he returned in September and made 11 emotional backing appearances for Cleveland, ultimately winning the American League Comeback Player of the Year award.

Carrasco may need to rely on injuries to other pitchers during spring training to make the Yankees' opener roster. The Yankees' starting rotation is led by double aces Gerrit Cole and Max Fried, with Carlos Roden, Louis Gill, Clark Schmidt and Marcus Stroman currently in the rotation.

However, adding starting pitcher depth before spring training is always beneficial, and Carrasco, as an experienced shooter, could be a great asset to the team when the Yankees report to Tampa.
