Sung-mun Song, the captain of South Korea’s national baseball team, has officially joined the San Diego Padres for the upcoming season. Today’s reports disclosed that his contract is structured as a "3+2" agreement, guaranteeing him at least $21 million (around 1.51 billion RMB) if the entire five-year term is executed.
Earlier reports indicated that Sung-mun Song, who played for the Kiwoom Heroes this season and served as captain of the South Korean team in the last 12-team tournament, would join the Padres. The Associated Press today further detailed the contract: it includes a $1 million signing bonus (about 7.19 million RMB), paid in two installments—the first within 30 days, and the second on January 15, 2027. His annual salaries are set at $2.5 million (approx. 17.98 million RMB) in 2026, $3 million (approx. 21.57 million RMB) in 2027, and $3.5 million (approx. 25.17 million RMB) in 2028.
Additionally, the contract contains a player option for $4 million (about 28.76 million RMB) in 2029 and a mutual option for $7 million (about 50.35 million RMB) in 2030. If the mutual option is declined, Song will receive a $1 million buyout. In other words, if the full five-year contract is fulfilled, his guaranteed total earnings will be at least $21 million.
The contract also includes incentive clauses: if Song wins the National League Rookie of the Year award, his salary in subsequent seasons will increase by $1 million; if he ranks among the top five in MVP voting in any season, his salary will permanently increase by $1 million each year thereafter.
Sung-mun Song will become the fifth Korean player to appear in the Major Leagues wearing a Padres uniform, following Park Chan-ho, Baek Cha-seung, Choi Ji-man, and Kim Ha-seong. The Padres will provide him with a dedicated translator and cover round-trip airfare between the U.S. and South Korea.
