With tears, Masahiro Tanaka bids farewell to the Rakuten Eagles, prioritizing MLB after exercising overseas free agency rights.

Masahiro Tanaka, the key pitcher for the NPB’s Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, utilized his overseas free agency status after the season, setting his sights on competing in MLB. He disclosed today that no formal offers have come in yet, expects more time is needed, but remains focused on advancing his career in the U.S., suggesting that returning to his former club is unlikely.

Today, at an event held in Sendai, Masahiro Tanaka emotionally stated during the closing ceremony: “These 13 years with the Eagles have been filled with both joy and hardship... I’ve been through so much. But serving the Eagles has truly made me incredibly happy.” His voice broke as tears welled up in his eyes.

He continued, “I had hoped to bring you good news here, but I think it might take some more time; I hope to share positive updates soon. Even if I am no longer part of the Eagles in the future, please continue to support me. I am deeply grateful to everyone over these 13 years. Now, it’s time for me to move forward.” Warm applause followed his speech.

After the event, Masahiro Tanaka told Japanese media frankly: “No team has made me a formal offer yet, so I feel more time is needed. However, I am still actively pursuing the goal of playing in the Major Leagues and hope to prioritize opportunities in the U.S.” The Rakuten organization had previously stated that Tanaka could choose to return after declaring free agency, but it now appears quite likely he will depart.
