It’s no surprise that Alex Bregman is a hot commodity among several teams in free agency. That said, The Athletic reports that the defending AL champion Toronto Blue Jays have joined the fierce race for this veteran third baseman. Although there have been rumors that the Blue Jays are trying to re-sign shortstop Bo Bichette and are closely linked with Kyle Tucker, Bregman appears to be more than just a fallback option if they fail to land Tucker or Bichette.
“Ideally, the Blue Jays want to add a left-handed hitter, but whether it’s the right-handed Bregman or Bichette, they fit the team’s defensive alignment better than lefties Tucker or Cody Bellinger,” Ken Rosenthal noted in his report. He also mentioned that Bregman’s leadership in the clubhouse could be a decisive factor.
The Blue Jays already have Bregman’s former Astros teammates George Springer and Myles Straw on their roster, which undoubtedly increases the likelihood of him joining. Toronto has been actively working this offseason, aiming to build on the momentum from their best season in a decade. Should Bregman sign with the Blue Jays, it likely means Ernie Clement will primarily handle second base, while Addison Barger would transition into a full-time outfielder.
