Yankees manager confirms no meeting with Tatsuya Imai; Boone admits uncertainty about team’s reinforcement plans

The New York Yankees, who have yet to take any significant action this offseason, had their manager Aaron Boone openly state “no” when questioned today about whether the team had met with Seibu Lions’ star pitcher Tatsuya Imai. He further disclosed that it remains uncertain if a meeting will be scheduled later. External reports indicate that the Chicago Cubs are the leading candidate to acquire Imai at this time.

Last year, the Yankees made it to the World Series but fell short of winning the championship. During the offseason, they strengthened their roster by acquiring players such as Cody Bellinger and Devin Williams via trades. However, after being eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series this year, the team’s roster has only shrunk — relief pitchers Williams and Luke Weaver have both left for the crosstown Mets, and Bellinger’s future with the team remains uncertain.

Tatsuya Imai challenged the Major Leagues this year through the posting system, and it had been rumored that the Yankees were strong contenders for his signing. Unexpectedly, in an interview with the New York Post on the 20th, manager Boone gave a straightforward “no” when asked if the team had met with Imai or planned to do so. Boone also stated he was “uncertain” whether the Yankees intend to engage in face-to-face negotiations with Imai. Based on this, outsiders speculate that the Chicago Cubs are currently the most likely destination for Imai.
