Behind the competition for Díaz among the Dodgers, Braves, and Mets, media reports have revealed new details.

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently announced signing top free-agent closer Edwin Díaz to a three-year, $69 million deal. Media have now disclosed further negotiation details: although he received two formal offers before signing, he was still awaiting a contract from his former team, the New York Mets. However, the Mets ultimately failed to meet his key conditions, leading him to turn to Los Angeles.

According to ESPN, Díaz received two offers during negotiations: a three-year deal from the Dodgers and a five-year contract from the Atlanta Braves. Despite feeling displeased that the Mets signed Devin Williams a few days earlier without informing him first, he still waited for an offer from his old team.

The report states that on December 7 (U.S. time), Díaz received the Mets' initial offer: a three-year, $66 million contract, which included $21 million in deferred payments spread over 10 years. In subsequent talks, the Mets decided to increase the signing bonus by $9 million to match the Dodgers’ offer and extended the deferred payment period to 15 years.

However, Díaz’s main condition was that, after deducting the deferred payments, the contract’s average annual value must still reach $20 million per year, and the deferred payments needed to be completed within a shorter timeframe. Sources revealed that the Mets rejected these terms. Although the Braves offered a longer contract, they also failed to meet Díaz’s demands.

In the end, the Dodgers presented Díaz with another offer: a three-year, $69 million deal including a $9 million signing bonus, $13.5 million deferred payments paid over 10 years, and a conditional team option for the 2029 season. This proposal, which satisfied Díaz, ultimately concluded the negotiations.
