NFL superstar quarterback Mahomes suffers ligament tear; Chiefs miss playoffs for the first time in 11 years

Kansas City Chiefs' star quarterback Patrick Mahomes left the game today because of an injury. In the end, the Chiefs were defeated 13-16 at home by the Los Angeles Chargers, sealing their first absence from the playoffs in 11 years.

Since the 2015 season, the Chiefs had made the playoffs for 10 consecutive years, reaching the Super Bowl five times in the past six seasons and winning three championships. However, this season they struggled, starting with two losses, managing to improve to 5-3, but then losing five of their last six games since November. Today's defeat officially ended their playoff hopes.

Mahomes, who signed the largest contract in NFL history five years ago—a 10-year, $450 million deal—and was named Super Bowl MVP in all three of the Chiefs' recent championships, was injured near the end of today's game, remaining on the ground for several minutes before being helped off by medical staff.

After the game, the Chiefs announced that Mahomes' MRI confirmed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He is currently discussing surgical options with the team, and barring any surprises, his season is over, with a strong possibility of impacting next year's campaign as well.

Mahomes posted on social media platform X: “I don’t know why this had to happen. Honestly, it really hurts, but all we can do now is trust God and keep pushing every day. Thanks to all the Chiefs fans for their constant support and to everyone who sent their blessings. I’ll come back stronger.”
