The Toronto Blue Jays bullpen adds a new member by signing submarine-style pitcher Rogers to a three-year deal.

Toronto Blue Jays keep enhancing their roster this offseason. Following the trade for sidearm pitcher Chase Lee from the Detroit Tigers, the Blue Jays have signed right-hander Tyler Rogers, who features a unique submarine delivery, to a three-year, $37 million deal in free agency to reinforce their bullpen.

According to MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand, this deal, not yet officially announced by the team, includes an automatic fourth-year option that could raise the total value to $48 million if exercised. The Blue Jays aim to build a bullpen capable of presenting hitters with multiple release angles, a critical advantage in the power-heavy American League East division.

After spending a full seven years in the major leagues exclusively with the San Francisco Giants, Tyler Rogers was traded mid-2025 season to the New York Mets. This move did not hinder him from producing his best career season: he led the league with 81 appearances, posted a 1.98 ERA, held a 0.94 WHIP, and achieved an ERA+ of 203, all personal bests.

His distinctive low-shoulder sidearm delivery (averaging a -61 degree release angle in 2025) may contribute to his health, as he has never been placed on the major league injured list. Additionally, he is renowned for his durability, ranking first in the league with 403 appearances since 2020.

Rogers, a pitcher who relies mainly on his sinker and slider to induce contact outs, ranked among the top in key 2025 metrics: his solid contact rate (2.1%) and walk rate (2.3%) both placed him in the top one percent league-wide. According to Statcast advanced data, his sinker, which he threw 74.5% of the time, ranked second in the majors for run value.

Approaching 35 years old, Rogers holds a unique distinction: he and his twin brother Taylor Rogers (also a free agent this winter) are the tenth pair of brothers in MLB history and previously played together on the Giants.

Like many teams this offseason, the Blue Jays emphasize depth and variety in strengthening their bullpen. Late last season and in the playoffs, the team leaned heavily on closer Jeff Hoffman and trade acquisition Louis Varland. Veteran reliever Yimi García contributed limited innings due to injury, and right-hander Yariel Rodríguez was optioned down.

With the free-agent relief pitcher market evolving rapidly, reports indicate the Blue Jays are also interested in former Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks.
