Shohei Ohtani’s special edition “Number 42” commemorative jersey with MVP autograph sells for over two million.

According to U.S. media reports, on “Robinson Day,” celebrating Jackie Robinson’s groundbreaking Major League debut in 1947, all players customarily wear the retired number 42 jersey. Recently, a special edition number 42 jersey worn by Shohei Ohtani on Robinson Day, April 15, 2024, was auctioned and sold for $330,200 (approximately 2.39 million RMB).

What makes this jersey particularly unique is Shohei Ohtani’s handwritten signature in kanji on the number “42,” along with the inscription “24 NL MVP” (2024 National League Most Valuable Player). Since Robinson symbolizes racial equality as the first African American player in Major League history, the annual “Robinson Day” jersey holds special commemorative significance, and Ohtani’s MVP autograph greatly enhances its collectible value.

In the 2024 season, Shohei Ohtani delivered a record-breaking performance as a hitter with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases, winning the MVP award and leading the Dodgers to a World Series championship, leaving a lasting impression on fans with his extraordinary achievements that year.

This is not the first time a Shohei Ohtani memorabilia item has fetched a high price. In an auction last October, a game-used ball commemorating his historic milestone as the first player ever to achieve “50 home runs and 50 stolen bases” sold for a staggering $4.392 million (approximately 31.8 million RMB), setting a record for the highest price ever paid for a sports game ball at auction.
