The Los Angeles Dodgers are preparing a blockbuster deal that could shake up the league. According to multiple media sources, the recently crowned champions are actively working to acquire Tarik Skubal, the Detroit Tigers’ two-time consecutive Cy Young left pitcher, known as the "New Tiger King," potentially offering a package involving five promising prospects in exchange for one player.
Having made no significant acquisitions during the offseason so far, the Dodgers have clearly set their sights on Skubal, the Tigers’ ace who has ranked highly in the AL Cy Young voting for two straight years, aiming to strengthen their roster for a three-peat championship run. Although the Tigers consider Skubal a cornerstone of their rebuild, reports suggest that if a highly attractive trade offer arrives, Detroit’s management might be open to parting ways with him.
Since Skubal’s control period lasts only one more year and he will become a free agent after next season, the Tigers currently have no plans to offer him a long-term extension, making a trade a real possibility. The Dodgers have taken note of this and are rumored to be willing to offer a super trade package featuring five top prospects. According to Dodgers insider "Sleeper Dodgers," the potential list includes right-hander Emmet Sheehan, who has already debuted this season with strong reviews; power-hitting catcher Dalton Rushing; top-five ranked outfielder Zyhir Hope and infielder Alex Freeland; plus ninth-ranked righty River Ryan. Except for 27-year-old Ryan, the others are all under 24 years old, making this offer enticing enough to catch the Tigers’ attention.
ESPN further reports that Skubal will become a free agent after the 2026 season and might seek a contract surpassing the record-setting deal of pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto (12 years, $325 million), increasing the likelihood of a trade. However, despite the Tigers publicly stating they do not want to trade their star lefty, rumors in the market have long suggested Detroit is willing to move him.
