Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates have proposed a four-year deal to left-handed slugger Kyle Schwarber. Rosenthal notes that the offer is "almost certainly over $100 million," but he also believes that despite the offer, the Pirates' chances of ultimately signing Schwarber remain slim.
This news further confirms the Pirates’ active approach in the free-agent market this offseason. Traditionally conservative in their spending, the team is showing unprecedented ambition during this break.
In the franchise’s history, the Pirates have only offered one contract exceeding $100 million—the $106.75 million extension signed by Bryan Reynolds. Their largest free-agent signing was Francisco Liriano in 2014 for $39 million. Successfully signing Schwarber would clearly signal the Pirates’ intent to aggressively pursue a more competitive short-term window for contention.
