Two pitchers from the Cleveland Guardians have been indicted in a gambling manipulation case, prompting a thorough MLB investigation.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported on Sunday that Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis L. Ortiz face official charges from Brooklyn prosecutors in New York, accused of manipulating betting metrics in MLB games.

The Guardians organization quickly issued a statement: "We are aware of the law enforcement actions and will continue to fully cooperate with authorities and Major League Baseball’s ongoing investigation."

MLB also released an official statement: "From the outset of the investigation, the league has been in contact with federal law enforcement and has actively cooperated throughout. We acknowledge the charges and arrests made today, and our internal investigation remains ongoing."

It is notable that MLB had placed Ortiz on the non-disciplinary paid leave list related to sports betting investigations as early as July 3, covering the All-Star break period. On July 18, his leave was extended through August 31. Clase was similarly placed on leave starting July 28, also initially set to end August 31. On August 31, the league announced both pitchers would remain on leave "until further notice."
