Indonesia is guaranteed a medal in badminton at the 2025 SEA Games after the draw conducted on December 6.
Indonesia's men's badminton team is certain to secure a medal at SEA Games 33 after the draw organized by host country Thailand this morning, December 6.
As the reigning gold medalist in the men's team event from the last SEA Games, Indonesia was given a direct spot in the semifinals without needing to play the quarterfinals. Since there is no bronze medal match in the team event, Alwi Farhan and his teammates have already secured the bronze medal.
A similar situation occurs in the women's team event where host Thailand also received special treatment as the defending SEA Games champions.
In the semifinals, Indonesia's men's badminton team will face the winner of the match between Singapore and Laos, while Thailand's women's team will compete against either Singapore or the Philippines.
Indonesia is taking this year's competition very seriously by bringing top athletes such as Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, Putri Wardani, Alwi Farhan, and the men's doubles pair Gutama/Isfahani. Unfortunately, two notable absences from the "Archipelago" are Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Jonatan Christie..
“The Wind God” Ginting is preparing to welcome his first child, while "Jojo" — who has won four SEA Games gold medals for Indonesian badminton — said he hasn't recovered in time and will focus on the BWF World Tour Finals later this December.
The badminton team events at SEA Games 33 will take place from December 7 to December 10. Vietnam's badminton team will only participate in the women's team event, as they brought only two male players to Thailand this year: Lê Đức Phát and Nguyễn Hải Đăng.
Nguyễn Thùy Linh and her teammates will face Malaysia in their opening match, a strong team featuring the world’s number two doubles pair: Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan.
